Hitting a Creative Wall

The only problem with making good art is that sometimes, in order to make good art, we have to be willing to make bad art.” – Julia Cameron

I love this quote from Julia Cameron. Tonight I am feeling a bit frustrated with my music practice. It’s not flowing as easily and as freely I had hoped. A few nights back I had a great songwriting session. I got something down on paper and recorded on my iphone. I used my mandolin instead of my guitar to help get the juices flowing. I’d say switching to a different instrument served me very well. It a tip I learned from the book I’m reading on songwriting for my songwriting class at school.

So often we can get stuck and we judge ourselves too critically. We have to remember that we take care of the quantity and God will take care of the quality. It’s our job to show up and do the work and God’s going to move and steer us in the right direction. I must remind myself of this encouragement. I must show up and give it my best shot. What do you do to overcome creative blocks?
